The village of Nieu-Bethesda is famous for its Owl House, an
eerie
monument to the works of Helen Martin. Go on a walk and
explore
the arts and crafts and gift shops. Enjoy Karoo cuisine at
the
friendly restaurants. Sip delicious home-brewed beer and
taste
different goats cheese.
Experience the numerous art galleries and participate in the
Fugard
Festival held in September of every year, (and in honour of
Athol
Fugard) who has made Nieu-Bethesda famous, especially after
his
film “Road to Mecca” was filmed here.
Also making Nieu-Bethesda famous, is the majestic landmark
of the
Compassberg Mountain (2502m or 8208 feet) - the highest
freestanding
mountain in the Southern Hemisphere. You can climb the
mountain by prior arrangement. (About a 2-3 hr climb to the
top).
NIEU-BETHESDA IS A HAVEN FOR PEACE AND QUIET IN A
